A Terrible Beauty

A Terrible Beauty was a tv movie dramatising the events surrounding the Irish rebellion of 1916.  Shot on location in Dublin.  I wanted to contrast the organisation of the English military command with the energy of the pitched battles going on in buildings all over the city.  The fighting scenes are shot close in and handheld giving it an intimate yet frantic feeling.  When the characters are running I wanted the camera to run with them.  When guns are fired they are fired at close quarters or directly into camera.  The aim was to bring the viewer into the moment and try to encourage them to invest in the desperation of these life and death situations.  I was fortunate to win the Irish Film and TV award in 2015 for my work on this project.
